I think the confusion is with the different string angles. I think you SHOULD pull as close to 90 degrees across each string as possible. HOWEVER-- Each string should have a slightly different angle because the bridge is CURVED and therefore in order to play perpendicular to each string there is a slightly different angle requirement, more "in" for the lower strings, more "out" on the upper strings.
