Books on this type of mental/physical activity talk about establishing neural networks between the brain and the muscles. Tests have shown that thinking about playing (correctly) establishes these networks almost as effectively as practicing.

Not all the neurons are in the head/brain - as per the headless chook example. And in a fast passage there is simply not the time for the brain to control the fingers because the speed of nerve impulse transimssion is not fast enough.

Then there is emotion, heart and soul ... whatever
