I forgot to mention in my post comparing Cleveland and Chicago that, for the 5 years that I was in Cleveland, the cello section sat on the outside. The new seating that was observed in Washington is, I believe, just a few years old.
I remember, with a good deal of amusement, when a guest conductor (I'll have to keep him anonymous) came to conduct the CSO at Ravinia shortly after our change to the new seating. He said, "I can always tell when I'm conducting an orchestra that has just changed music directors. The seating gets changed because the new music director can't think of anything else to do!"
