Leaving aside how cramped and uncomfortable it is for cellists to be wedged in between other string sections, with our horizontal bow-strokes, there are sound issues as well. Our f-holes are not at shoulder level like the fiddles, who can project out no matter they sit. As our CSO colleagues have pointed out, when the celli are anywhere on the inside, their sound goes right into a mass of other humans, sitting between them and the audience.
