My experiences of putting my cello in the cargo hold of the plane have been successful - i recently traveled from australia to japan with my cello and it survived the trip there and back. As long as you inform the airline staff beforehand that your cello is fragile, they should be able to carry it on and off the plane for you and pack it safely in the hold.
