To pat and others re: teaching intonation

Many, many thanks for your detailed and very useful replies. It really proves the value of this board.

Allow me to leech a little more if I may... I've talked to them about the natural tendencies of the hand, and have them practicing 4 octave scales repeating each interval three times and also by comparing to open strings or droning. They can now correct themselves when they play a 4 8va scale,which is gratifying, but in concertos (Kabalevsky, Saint-Saens for example) they will get of and not hear it even after many weeks of patient correction. Is there anything else you would suggest for students like these who are otherwise at a medium advanced level but having this serious deficiency? Thanks very much.
