Thanks for that information. By chance I am participating in a master class with Maria Kliegel in June (She is one of the first "Big Name" cellists to come to New Zealand in quite a while - I will be playing the 1st mvt of the Shostakovich concerto no. 1 to her - Rostropovich is also coming over but I am unsure as to whether he is giving classes/lessons to those not participating in the Adam cello competition)
: Hi,

: I can only answer the question about who is continuing the teachings of starker.. I might be wrong but as far as I know, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi(USA) and Maria Kliegel(Germany) are the two people. They were Starker's star students.

: : I'm a cellist currently studying in my home country of New Zealand and am looking to continue my studies with a master degree overseas next year. I am a great fan of the "new" sound that I hear in the recordings of Yo yo Ma and Steven Isserlis as opposed to the more Rostropovich type of colour. I am wondering who/where are the teachers that promote this "cleaner" style of playing? I am also interested as to who is continuing the teachings of Starker and Greenhouse (my current proffesors teachers). I have had a little insight into the mechanics of Greenhouses "springy" left hand and found that it had an immediate positive effect on the amount of tension in my hand.
