If you were discussing a topic with a friend, in person, you could tell if he or she was becoming upset or angry. When you are writing across the internet, you don't have that advantage. Just as the substitute teacher did not know that the student was close to the edge, we also have no way of knowing when someone is ultrasensitive or even close to the edge. So our best bet is to assume that the other person IS sensitive, and we can try to make sure we are saying whatever we are saying in the nicest possible way.
I see your point. And a good one! Of course I hope everyone follows this advice. I have my own personal agenda also: that posters who post anonomously only post messages that they would only be willing to post with their real names and email addresses attached. If everyone followed this idea, we'd have a great chat board! I have nothing against anonymous posters, as long as they post responsibly!
